The route: Nice to Avignon via the A8 and A7

The standard routing follows the A8 motorway westbound — past Antibes, Cannes, the Esterel coast — before the long inland descent towards Aix-en-Provence and the A7 junction. North of Aix, the A7 (the old Route Nationale 7) runs straight through the Rhône corridor into Avignon. Total distance: 257 km. Typical journey time: 2h30 under normal conditions, 3 hours in summer peak traffic around Aix.

For Luberon destinations — Gordes, Roussillon, Lourmarin, Crillon-le-Brave, Mazan — the driver exits the motorway east of Avignon and crosses the Luberon plateau on the D routes. These add 20–40 minutes of scenic road but no motorway congestion. For Pont du Gard and Uzès, the route continues past Avignon on the A9 westbound before turning north into the Gard.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Orange and Carpentras sit north of Avignon on the A7/A9 axis — straightforward extensions of the main route requiring minimal detour.
